"Physical Demands Of Tennis"


Tennis is a great sport because you can get quality exercise with built-in rest periods, and you can have fun competing at any age or level. Tennis is the perfect sport... not only to help you live longer, but also to improve the quality of your life. Sprinting to the ball, changing direction, reaching, stretching, lunging, stopping and starting... all these characteristics combined with maintaining good balance and proper technique through-out a match are critical for optimal performance on the court. Therefore, players must address Agility, Endurance, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Strength, Aerobic and Anaerobic Fitness to improve their tennis game.

Tennis requires explosive movements and players with explosive first steps get into position quickly, set-up well and hit effective shots. Agility is crucial to good movement. It allows you to be in the correct position and provides a solid platform from which to hit the ball. Good Endurance can help you hit the ball just as hard at the end of a match as at the beginning. Flexibility is important to make shots that place your body in extreme positions and ranges of motion. Both upper and lower body power are necessary in tennis. To maximize your Power, you must transfer your lower body power to the upper body. Speed is important to get to the balls quickly. The faster you get to the ball, the more time you have to prepare for your shot. Strength throughout a flexible, unrestricted range of motion will help prevent injury and enhance performance. While an Aerobic exercise will improve your endurance for longer matches, Anaerobic exercise helps with energy used in short bursts of activity. An explosive first step will give you the speed to get to the balls hit farther away from your body. So remember, each fitness component can make a difference in your movement and court coverage.
