"The Laws of Motion in Tennis"

The Fundamental Laws of Motion play a huge role in understanding Tennis Fundamentals.

  • The first Law of Motion states that anybody will stay at rest or stay in motion until acted upon by an outside force... In tennis, many players stay low in a crouched ready position and become too fixed making quick movement difficult.
  • The second Law of Motion states that force equals mass times acceleration... This means that since mass is usually constant during a movement, the more force you provide, the more you will accelerate. In tennis, a linked system is used to create tremendous force, which is transferred up through the legs, hips, trunk and upper body to forcefully strike the ball.
  • The third Law of Motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction... When serving in tennis, you push-up against the ground and the ground pushes back with an equal and opposite force.

There are many more other examples of how each law plays a role in tennis. I encourage you to try to study and understand how they work to help your movements on the court. It is just as important to find-out how they work to hurt your movement on the court as a player.
